BEHIND THE PROJECT | AAT Fisherman Islands Terminal

Keeping critical terminal infrastructure moving in a 24/7 port environment

What does it take to maintain the machinery and infrastructure behind a cargo terminal that operates around the clock?

At AAT’s Fisherman Islands Terminal at the Port of Brisbane, maintenance sits directly alongside daily terminal operations, shipping movements and the equipment required to keep cargo moving.

In 2024, CE Group commenced a three-year Maintenance Services Agreement supporting the electrical and mechanical maintenance of machinery and operating infrastructure across the terminal. The agreement operates within a 24-hour, seven-day environment and includes provision for a further one-year renewal.

Maintenance built around operations

A working terminal creates a very different maintenance environment.

Equipment availability matters. Maintenance windows need to align with operational requirements. Breakdowns require responsive fault finding and repair, while planned work needs to be coordinated without unnecessarily disrupting terminal activity.

The maintenance program brings together preventative, planned and corrective maintenance, breakdown response, inspections, fault finding and repairs across terminal machinery and operating infrastructure.

This creates a continuous maintenance cycle focused on keeping equipment safe, serviceable and available for operations.

From reactive maintenance to asset reliability

Effective maintenance goes beyond responding when equipment fails.

The agreement incorporates maintenance planning and scheduling, work order management, asset condition monitoring and maintenance history, allowing maintenance activity to be managed against the condition and operational requirements of the terminal’s assets.

Performance is monitored across measures including preventative maintenance completion, equipment availability, machinery downtime, breakdowns, work orders and safety performance.

The maintenance framework establishes minimum operational availability requirements of 98% for new machinery and operating infrastructure and 95% for existing assets.

People, planning and systems

Delivering maintenance across a 24/7 terminal also requires the workforce and systems behind the technical work to operate effectively.

CE Group’s scope includes day-to-day maintenance supervision, workforce and roster coordination, maintenance planning and scheduling, maintenance records and reporting through AAT’s maintenance management system.

Teams work alongside AAT operational personnel and other contractors, coordinating maintenance activity around terminal operations and shipping requirements.

It is an integrated approach that connects people, maintenance planning and technical capability around one objective: supporting the safe and reliable operation of critical terminal infrastructure.
