BEHIND THE PROJECT | Bundaberg Port CUI
Powering the infrastructure that keeps products moving through one of Queensland’s regional ports
What does it take to connect a new materials handling system into an established port environment?
At the Port of Bundaberg, the Common User Infrastructure (CUI) project delivered new permanent conveyor infrastructure designed to support safe, efficient product outloading for existing and future Port users
The project incorporated new Yard and Cross Conveyors together with modifications to existing infrastructure, creating the systems required to handle new products through the established terminal.
Connecting power, equipment and control
Behind a conveyor system is an extensive network of electrical and instrumentation infrastructure.
CE Group delivered the Electrical and Instrumentation installation package supporting the new materials handling infrastructure, bringing together power, control, instrumentation and communications across the project.
The electrical scope extended from LV power, control and instrumentation cabling through to electrical drives, pumps, motorised valves, lighting and power, distribution boards, plant earthing and lightning protection.
Cable ladder and support systems formed another significant component of the installation, alongside MV/HV cabling and the electrical connections required across mechanical equipment associated with the materials handling system.
Instrumentation across the process
Moving product efficiently relies on more than electrical power. Field equipment needs to communicate with the systems controlling the wider process.
The instrumentation works included installation, termination and testing of field instrumentation, solenoid and on/off valves, communications cabling and specialist instrumentation and control equipment.
The package also incorporated instrument air and impulse piping, manifolds and associated fittings, together with the mounting and external cable termination of package PLC and control system architecture.
Delivering within an established port environment
Port infrastructure brings together materials handling equipment, electrical systems, mechanical equipment, control systems and existing operational assets.
Successful integration depends on each of those interfaces working together.
For the Bundaberg Port CUI project, the E&I package required coordination across new conveyor infrastructure, existing terminal assets, vendor equipment and other construction activities while progressing through installation, testing and project completion requirements.
The result is a strong example of the multidisciplinary electrical capability required behind modern ports and bulk materials handling infrastructure.
